Maximum health and stamina
You start with 100 of each.
- Health is 100, plus 2 for every
Vitality level above 1, plus a bonus of 1 from level 50 (2 at level 100). That is 199 at level 50 and 300 at level 100. - Stamina is 98 plus twice your
Dexterity level while it is under 50, 99 plus twice your level from 50 to 99, and 300 at level 100.
Both use your effective level, so boosts count, and gear can add bonus health or stamina on top.

Levelling Vitality also heals you 10 health for every level gained, and levelling Dexterity gives you 2 stamina per level.
Natural regeneration
Health comes back on its own at 10 a minute, one point every six seconds. It stops at 40% of your maximum. Past that, you need food.
Some effects raise or lower the rate, and the last curse stage, Death's Door, stops it altogether (see occultism and the curse).
Stamina refills much faster, 43 a second. After you use an ability it waits 0.7 seconds before refilling. Sprinting drains 7 a second instead.
Blocking costs stamina
Every hit you block takes 20% of your maximum stamina, and a blocked heavy attack does three times its usual stamina damage. Parries cost nothing. The details are on blocking and parrying.
Food
Eat to heal. Most food heals at once; stews and a few others heal over time, a little every 1.5 seconds for 15 seconds.
Fried Lamprey heals a share of your maximum health instead of a fixed amount, which gets better as your health grows.
- Healing earns
Vitality experience: 1.2 for every point of health actually restored. Eating at full health gives nothing. - Your food healing multiplier is 1 unless something changes it. The curse cuts food healing by 25% once the meter reaches 50%, and by 50% at 80%.
- Raw vegetables and fruit heal very little but give some stamina back.

Ichor
Small Ichor,
Medium Ichor,
Large Ichor and
Powerful Ichor carry a healing value, but they heal nothing at first. Ichor healing uses its own multiplier, which is zero until your curse meter reaches 50% ("Ichor now heals") and doubles at 80%. What ichor always does is restore occultic charge and lower your curse. See occultism and the curse.
