What it does

Multiplies the damage of melee slash, pierce and bludgeon hits. The bonus grows quickly at first and flattens out, reaching three times the damage at level 100.

Maces, axes and pickaxes train Strength alone. Throwing axes split the experience between Ranged and Strength, and greatswords between Strength and Dexterity. The in-game tooltip also lists swords, but the server gives sword hits to Dexterity.

How to train it

Fighting: 1.8 xp for every point of damage you deal with a weapon that trains Strength, split evenly when the weapon trains two skills.
