What happens when you die
You wake up next to Adon with full health and stamina. Your skills and experience are untouched; death never costs levels.
On most worlds, everything in your inventory goes to Adon's death container, with a few exceptions:
- Equipped gear stays on you.
- Your coins are kept. They are not carried as an item, so death cannot take them.
- Your bank is never touched.
Small Ichor,
Medium Ichor and
Large Ichor stay in your pack.
Powerful Ichor is not on that list, so it goes with everything else.- Quest items stay.
Every status effect is cleared when you die. If your curse meter was above 75%, it drops to 75%. See occultism and the curse.
Your first death also starts the quest Meeting With Death, in which Adon explains himself. His version of the arrangement:
Gone! Reduced to ashes. But do not worry, I have caught them before they became dust in the wind. With your help and a small contribution of coin I can return them to you as they were...
Getting your things back
Talk to Adon to open the death container.
- Free picks first. From your latest death you may take up to three items back for free. A stack counts as one pick, and you take the whole stack. You have to make your free picks before you can buy anything.
- Then buy the rest. Everything else costs half its value, rounded up, with quality counted in: a Rare item costs 2.2 times as much to recover as a Common one.
- Older deaths wait. The container never expires and survives logging out. Dying again does not wipe it, but only the newest death's items can be picked for free.
With a humanity of 100 or more you get a fourth free pick. Humanity is explained on occultism and the curse.
Adon is good-humoured about the fee: "Sorry about having to charge you, but business is business!"

Carry less into danger. Bank what you do not need, and keep your best finds equipped rather than in your pack.
Worlds that keep your inventory
A world can be set to let you keep your inventory. There, dying moves nothing, and Adon says so:
Whenever you're ready. Your belongings made the trip back with you, so there's nothing for me to hold onto this time.
Quest fights
Unless a quest battle says otherwise, falling in one does not count as a real death. You are brought back on the spot with nothing lost, and the battle starts over.
Cheating death
At 300 humanity or more, a killing blow has a 35% chance to leave you on 1 health instead, unkillable for one second (
Death Defy). It can only happen once every five minutes.
The
Second Chance effect works the same way for a while: "For 30 seconds, a fatal hit leaves you at 10% health instead of killing you."
