Elmer Albero runs the lumber yard at "the poplar grove due South West of here, beyond the west gate", as Captain Badon puts it. He teaches you woodcutting in One Short Lesson, and afterwards lets you keep practicing: "The trees I plant grow back quick, so there isn't any cost to practicing your arm on them." Firemaking is another matter. He has sworn off it.
Something like that, took a pyrocratic oath not to start fires anymore, but cutting wood is another story! I can teach you all about that.
Ask him how he cooks, then, and he answers "It's raw yabbies and cabbage for me!", "because I accidentally burned down a whole town…" Ask instead why he never burns his own logs, and it becomes "Just a building or two!" Itsop Lloyd and Greg Affer place the fire in 
Badongerst, about five years ago. Elmer's own account is that "I had a cooking fire going outside my old house, I stepped away from it, and when I came back half the block was lit up", and "The town agreed, and I left." He says "I built a life here in Kal Crossing."

His old friend [[Itsop Lloyd]] has spent years building a case that Elmer was framed, and in [[quest:The Badongerst Blaze]] Itsop is proven right. Greg Affer had "meant to pass the title onto him later that Summer", and the sorcerer who made the fire spread confesses she did it so that "the Lumberjack Fugemann wanted out of the picture would never work in this town again." Offered the role of Alderman at last, Elmer turns it down: "I have a home and a place in Kal Crossing. I have dear friends there, a new life!"

A bit of a sore topic, I'll admit. I wasn't as careful as I should have been during one dry season and set a town on fire.
Hey it was a rough day at work, anyone can make a mistake! I don't want to talk about it anymore, how about I teach you how to cut down trees instead?
I spent five years thinking I burned down half a town. Five years. And now you want me to walk back in there like none of that happened?
