Badongerst

Located in the valley just West of Kal Crossing, the people of Badongerst are still redeveloping the region after a war wiped most of the farmsteads of the region out nearly a hundred years ago.

History

Badongerst carries a hero's name. In the stories Mack Errol of Kal Crossing heard as a boy, Captain Badon of the Fishing Wars hid "farmers and civilians-turned-warriors in the cellars" of the homesteads here and struck at "the first morning light", and the enemy was "pushed back to the coast." When you guess that the town was named for him, Mack answers: "Where else would it have come from? He was a hero of the region and they memorialized him for it!" He adds that "Captain Badon and many of his other friends are buried in the Graveyard south of Badongerst", though Theodore says Gregor had his best friend buried in Kal Crossing. His great-grandson Theodore says young men in the region still try to be "bold as Badon."

The in-game blurb places the valley "just West of Kal Crossing", where "the people of Badongerst are still redeveloping the region after a war wiped most of the farmsteads of the region out nearly a hundred years ago." Itsop Lloyd says the Old Badongerst Tunnels "haven't been used in the better part of a century, it's not exactly common knowledge where the tunnels begin." Penny Tencherries says "My prison just happens to be built right atop a vast network of old mine shafts, rich with all kinds of ore veins."

The Blaze

The town's more recent wound is the fire of about five years ago, the Badongerst Blaze. The quest log says it "razed the old Badongerst castle"; the people who were there talk about houses. Itsop says "The fire had a source at a cooking fire that Elmer had started near his old house", and Elmer Albero says "when I came back half the block was lit up." Elmer still believes he started it: "The town agreed, and I left." Greg Affer, the old Alderman, says "no one was hurt, but we were still set back that season and had to rebuild a number of homes", and a new home now stands on the foundation of Elmer's old one. Greg had "meant to pass the title onto him later that Summer", but after the fire he handed it to Sumner Fugemann, who "used to co-run the Apple Orchard".

Spoilers: who started the fire

The fire was made worse on purpose. [[Matchilda Arden]], whose crew Sumner Fugemann hired "A little over 5 years ago", confesses: "I used my magic to help the fire take root and spread, doing enough damage that the Lumberjack Fugemann wanted out of the picture would never work in this town again." Since then he has paid the crew "nice cuts of all of Badongerst's exports". The letter in his desk confirms "payment for services for a term of 10 years and lodging within the Badongerst Tunnels." In the town square, Itsop accuses him, Matchilda confesses, and Greg matches the handwriting and sigil. Told to come quietly to face the king, Fugemann shouts "Initiate the plan!" and escapes. Afterwards Greg offers Elmer the role of Alderman; Elmer answers "I have a home and a place in Kal Crossing", and Greg says he will "act as an intermediary until I find a new person to pass the title onto." Told in [[quest:The Badongerst Blaze]].

Around the valley

Badongerst is a farming town. Hayward Bale says "Badongerst is well known for our healthy and creamy milk", and Heather Vayne lives in the apple orchard house by the Apple Farm, where she has tracked the weather every day for twenty years. In the Easy as Pie event, an apple farmer at the Apple Farm calls for help because "we still have apples full of trees, and all the other farmhands are busy". Theodore Badon's road to the South Fortress runs west out of Kal Crossing to Badongerst, then south past the Prison Quarry. Further west lie The Great Graveyard and Druid's Copse, home ground of the druid circle in Paths Diverge. Beneath the town run the Hidden Tunnels.
