History

The game's own blurb for Kal Crossing still reads "[Kal Crossing Description Needed]", so this page is pieced together from what its people say.

Kal Crossing is where the king lives. Wesfil Castle holds King Wesfil, "the thirty sixth" according to his culinary quartermaster, Sir Loin. The king signs his blessings "King Eric Wesfil, Ruler of Badongerst". Liza, his stewardess, "has records of all happenings in South Umbardom", in Cassius Boone's words, and works from Liza's Office in the castle.

If you die at the estate, Kal Crossing is where you open your eyes after Adon brings you back. You arrive in the graveyard behind the Domaanziin Temple, where Cassius tends "the church and cemetery of Kal Crossing." The Town Crier sends anything about the undead to Captain Theodore Badon at the North Gate. Theodore points you to the Kal Mine "due South East of here across the bridge", where Agneiss Bellows works with Silvia's forge just south of it, and to Elmer Albero "at the poplar grove due South West of here, beyond the west gate". Connor Jurin lives in "that large tower by the road", south of town. The bank, says Lendie Tender, is "open at all times", and "the general store on the north side of town" buys almost anything. East of town lies the Wesfil Loid, and Mack Errol lives "inside his house by the water".

The old war

The town's heroes come from the Fishing Wars of the Fourth Age. In Mack Errol's telling, "months of fighting on the coast led to a land invasion", and Captain Badon hid "farmers and civilians-turned-warriors in the cellars" beneath their homes, then struck at "the first morning light" while the enemy rested in the captured homesteads. When the ghost of Corporal Emmanuel Downe swears it is "the year twelve-oh-four", you tell him it is "the year one-thousand three hundred and thirty third of the Fourth Age", and that his year "was one-hundred and twenty-nine years ago." Theodore says Gregor lost his best friend in the war and "had him buried here in Kal Crossing at his friend's request", and "made the walk from his home out West all the way to Kal just to visit the grave until his final days."

Theodore, Gregor's great-grandson, repeats what his father told him: the war "was fought over land surrounding the Amperus Loima at the center of the continent", in "a race to annex" the magical wellsprings that "had appeared across the continent". He adds that "Connor's Tower is built over one of these Wellsprings", a "rather weak magical hotspot".

Now

A newer war is going on up north, against the undead, and it has left Kal Crossing short. "We keep sending our best trained knights north to support the war efforts against the undead", Theodore says, and he cannot offer you gear "thanks to material shortages in response to the war." Silvia Bellows says the crown's orders are "primarily for copper and sometimes iron armor", while "There are shipments of coal that get sent north for refining into steel". That is the fight Silvia and Agneiss take to the throne in Persistence.

Liza tells you in confidence how she came to be stewardess. Theodore was "helping manage the kingdom alongside King Wesfil", but as the undead drew him away, "the kingdom was starting to slip": "caravans were constantly being attacked on the road by bandits, the city wasn't keeping up on repairing many of its buildings, support wasn't being given to the border territories", and the king was "so distracted sampling his cakes and celebrating his birthday or some big feast every few months."

What the locals say

Life is quiet here, I hope that it persists... the bad news up north is making me anxious.

A woman near the temple

Don't you ever get tired of the journey here from Badongerst?

A man near the eastern edge of town

Incredible how the Banks trained birds to collect and carry bank box chests from the roads back to the Bank... those birds must be very strong.

A young banker inside the Kal Crossing bank

That Captain Badon is quite handsome, and he works so hard too! I wish he'd stop by my stall sometime...

A woman in the north of town, whose friend replies:

You're telling me! I always see him standing guard by the north wall when he's done with his rounds, I feel like I should talk to him sometime...

With everything going on it sounds like the town could use the extra men, but I don't want to put my life at risk with a kid on the way...

A man among the market stalls

... I think there may be too many pumpkin stalls in town.

A man by the pumpkin stalls on the east side

Don't distract me, I'm busy!
