How to get there

The Abyss lies at the bottom of an old mineshaft east of the Moorne Fort, whose deed Sterling Gaither has just bought. The quest log calls it "the bottom of the mineshaft (the Abyss)". There is another way down: Gullible Roger says "a kindly forest man in raggedy armor informed me of some treasure in this great pit", and that "something must have bumped or kicked me into this accursed hole". Down below you will meet Cave Thrunk and Abyss Caps, a Valac den, Deep Caps whose "psionic attacks" go for the mind, and the Lesser Demon Pits.
The office "just inside the shaft" has a desk, and "The office desk is a wreck. Whoever ran this place is long gone." Its logbook covers "various happenings in the mines over the years", and near the end, an expedition "trying to find out what lies in the deepest part of the Abyss." Four pages are missing. One of the party, Lou, borrowed them for a journal of their own, and you can find them in A Business Adventure:
I forgot to bring a logbook with me on our journey, so a few pages from the mine logbook won't be missed! Our party of six ventured from the safe shafts along the Western Tunnels. We know that there are demon brutes along the East, so that would be a worse route.
Lou
What a disaster, by the spheres I said this was a stupid job. And when we got through the spider caves, we realized that Lou was gone. They were all too cowardly to come back for you, so I said I'd go back on my own and bring you home.
Bronk
But now there is a strange feeling in my head, I don't think we are alone in here, beyond the spiders is something else- I'm not sure but it's taunting me, I can feel its violence in my head…
Noch
This whole thing has fallen apart, half our team is gone, and now we've awoken something vile. We've reached the bottom, but there is no time, or way for us to make it out.
Tom
Tom's page ends with the tunnels going "even deeper than you could imagine", and with three survivors, Illi, Ocelot and Tom, fleeing that way "in hopes of living to one day escape these horrible tunnels."
At the bottom you may also find a Northgaelian soldier with a broken leg, which is where Deep Trouble begins. One of the Spot Cap rune stones is hidden down here too, and the rune rubbed from it carries a strong sense of wanting.
