The story behind it
The ghost in the Kal Crossing graveyard belongs to Corporal Emmanuel Downe, who fought in the Fishing Wars beside his "good friend and higher up Captain Gregor Badon." Until you help him, "The nameplate on this large gravestone is old, the name is smudged and is in desperate need of cleaning." He swears it is "the year twelve-oh-four"; you tell him it is "the year one-thousand three hundred and thirty third of the Fourth Age."
He wants three things before he can rest: to know what happened after the war, to know where "my old lover, Cordelia Wedgewood is buried", and to have his signet ring back. Someone "dug up my grave and took the ring from my body", and the ring "was given to me by a friend". Jean Smith remembers that "'e was buried with the ring zat 'e was gifted".
Liza points you to "a set of graves up on the hill South-South-West of here just past Connor's Tower". There you find Cordelia under another name. Her stone reads:
Resting here is Cordelia Casten - A loving mother and dear friend. She watches over the place where she first found love for all time.
Spoilers: the thief
The ring was taken by [[Phoebe Casten]]. At the trial in the temple you can accuse her outright: she is Cordelia's great-granddaughter, and Cordelia "was the one who gave the ring to Emmanuel in the first place!" Phoebe meant to use it, and occultism, to bring back her friend Aislin. "Because I miss her, Cass. She was my best friend, I miss spending time with her, I miss her voice, living without her is…" She had come to the temple that day to return it: "I came here today to speak with you in earnest and return the ring." Cassius blames himself: "I should have been a better listener".
When it is over, the nameplate on Emmanuel's grave reads: "Resting here is Corporal Emmanuel Downe - while his body sleeps, his spirit watches over his brothers in arms."
It makes my bitter end feel just a bit more sweet knowing that my sacrifice wasn't in vain, that in the end the people who I cared about never forgot me.
