Every attack starts from a damage stat of 8. The game takes the larger of the creature's two damage numbers and puts it on all six damage types, and each attack then uses the type it deals.

Experience
Combat experience comes from the damage you deal: 1.8 xp per point, split evenly between the skills your weapon trains. Bringing a chicken down from full health is worth about 27 xp in total. Damage it blocks or you take gives Defense xp on top.
