Your first hours

What to do once Captain Badon lets you go. The quests that open up, your first coins, and the gear to aim for as your levels climb.

If you have not finished One Short Lesson yet, start with getting started.

Quests that open up

Five quests need nothing more than One Short Lesson behind you. Captain Badon points you at three of them by name.

Shepherd For HireBarnus, at his farm south of Kal Crossing1 quest point, 100 Artisan

The Badongerst BlazeItsop Lloyd, at his house in Badongerst1 quest point, 1,000 Survival, 1,000 Woodcutting, 700 Defense

Shepherd for Hire starts with a trip to the General Store for Shears, so bring a few coins.

A few more open up once you have some levels:

Your first death starts Meeting With Death on its own. It is short.

Quest points are worth collecting early. They count towards your humanity, which softens the curse (see occultism and the curse).

Your first coins

Lendie Tender at the bank says it herself: "If there are any items you want to sell rather than store, just visit the general store on the north side of town!" The General Store buys almost anything at full value, as much as any shop pays. Raw materials sell for little early on and much more later:

Gear by metal

Melee weapons, plate armor, pickaxes and axes come in four metals: copper from level 1, iron from 10, steel from 20 and Morion from 35. You make them at an anvil with Forging, or buy the copper ones at the General Store.

Better pickaxes and axes do not just look nicer. Each tier adds 5 percentage points to your chance per attempt, and every tier above what a rock or tree asks for gives you a free success on it before it starts to run dry (see gathering).

Gear by wood

Bows, wands and staves follow the trees: poplar first, then willow, spruce and maple. You carve bows and wands with Survival and enchant wands with Arcana.

Armor for bows and magic

Plate is for fighting up close. Archers have leather and fur, casters wool, cloth and silk. Past the first set, each asks for the skill it suits as well as some Defense.

Habits worth forming

  • Bank before you fight. Dying sends your pack to Adon, not your gear, coins or bank. See death and recovery.
  • Carry food. Health only comes back on its own up to 40%. See health and stamina.
  • Keep an eye on the curse meter. Crush an ichor now and then; plenty of creatures drop them.
  • Craft by hand while you level. Recipes with a minigame make you do it once anyway, and by hand pays 1.75 times the experience.
